I was watching two different talk shows at two different times. The topics were the same though. The theme of the shows were women who partied while they were pregnant. These women were smoking cigarettes, doing drugs and drinking alcohol throughout the whole term of their pregnancies and had a firm belief that all this wasn't going to have an effect on their unborn children, that the baby was going to be normal whatsoever. On one talk show they had a woman, 18 years old I believe, via satellite from some particular hospital. She was one of these women who was partying throughout her pregnancy and just gave birth at eight and a half months. The baby was born blue and had to be put in an incubator, I believe. I don't think there was ever an update on the babies condition.
I Have to ask, emphatically, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? Didn't anyone ever educate them and tell them that anything they put directly into their bodies may effect their unborn child? Are they going to be able to sit their child down and explain to them that what they did while they were pregnant is why their child is born deformed and born with FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME. Are they going to say " Mommy made a mistake, she was an idiot because she didn't believe the doctors and the facts that said if I do this I may harm my unborn child. Now you are going to have to pay for mommy's mistake for the rest of your life and suffer through it."
What if you wanted to put this baby up for adoption? Do you honestly think that anyone will adopt your mistake? We are supposed to learn from our mistakes not pay for them. To me that's child abuse and attempted murder and should be treated as such. If a woman deliberately abuses a child whether it be born or unborn she should be thrown in jail and ordered to undergo counseling then she might be able to see/or be reunited with her child/children. If she happened to do it again or neglect the child, she should then be thrown in jail for a very long time, where, the opportunity to think about what has transpired is prevalent Furthermore, mandatory sterilization should be part of the sentence.
To me that seems fair enough because if they did this to one child they may do it to another and if they are sterilized, the possibility to produce more children is not present The same goes for the Division of Youth and Family Services, social workers, police officers and anyone who knows about this and doesn't do anything about it. They should be held liable, be fired from their jobs and must do some kind of jail time and/or community service because they are just as guilty.
That is why I think there should be a national law requiring a parental license. In high school and college it would be a mandatory requirement to take a parental licensing program. Even couples who are thinking of becoming parents would have to take this program. It would consist of lectures and demonstrations by experts as well as classes and tests to obtain their license. They would also have to take refresher courses and be retested every three to six months.
This program would educate men and women about birth control, child abuse, the effects of drugs, smoking and alcohol during pregnancy, and places to call and go to in case of an emergency. There would be specially trained authorities, such as
the Division of Youth and Family Services, social workers and police officers who
would make unannounced visits to make sure their isn't any wrong doing going on and that the parents are doing the best to raise their children. If they fail any of
their tests or don't show up for any of their classes they would get points against them. After a certain amount of points they would have their parental licenses
suspended, do community service and pay fines which would go to a children's charity. If there was such a program maybe babies wouldn't be born addicted
to drugs and alcohol, abused or dumped in garbage cans. Being a parent is the same as having a driver's license. They're both privileges, not obligations.
